Steven M. Mirin, MD

Dr. Steven Mirin is a psychiatrist with broad administrative experience both as a hospital CEO and as the director of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).. As a consultant, Dr. Mirin works with faculty practice groups, hospitals, and health care systems on strategic planning, governance issues, leadership development, and physician-hospital partnerships. He has 25 years of experience planning and implementing change in complex health care organizations.
As APA Medical Director from 1997 to 2002, Dr. Mirin worked with staff and volunteer leadership to develop and implement a strategic plan for restructuring the organization and its three corporate subsidiaries. This resulted in the integration and consolidation of the APA’s publishing operations, the revitalization of its Foundation, and the creation of the Institute for Research and Education.
From 1988 to 1997, Dr. Mirin was President and Psychiatrist in Chief of McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass., a component of the Partner’s Health Care System and a major teaching hospital of the Harvard Medical School. During his tenure McLean underwent a complete reconfiguration of its service delivery system, doubled the size of its research facilities and budget (to $20M/year), and completed a $32M capital campaign.
Dr. Mirin joined has participated in and/or led consulting engagements at Columbia University, the Dana Farber Cancer Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, the University of Minnesota, and other healthcare organizations.
