By training and by inclination, physicians are independent thinkers. With a discipline that requires them to make countless decisions on diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, they must be.  

This culture of independence raises some unique issues when it comes to physician leadership. Independent thinkers can be critical of leaders they feel lack integrity or expertise. In the role of leader, they may lack skills in negotiation, communication, or other areas – even when they have the required knowledge and vision.

Health care organizations need effective leadership to carry out initiatives in quality improvement, patient safety, and business performance. Change programs can sputter and stall without the right leadership.
